Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are the small thin veins just below your skin surface. Spider veins are usually red, purple, or blue, and they often appear on the legs but can also appear in other areas. Often, spider veins can develop on the nose and cheeks, which can be especially upsetting because they're so visible.

Spider veins can occur on their own, but in many cases they grow in groups. You may have a network of spider veins, each moving away from a middle area, or you may have spider veins connected to larger varicose veins.

Why do spider veins develop?

There are many possible causes of spider veins. Vein valve malformation or valve malfunction is the main cause of spider veins. When your vein valves don't or can't work properly, the blood can't keep moving up towards your heart like it should. The blood then collects in the vein, expanding the vein walls and becoming a spider vein.

Certain things can put extra pressure on your veins, which means you may be able to prevent spider veins in some cases. Long periods of standing, a very sedentary lifestyle, and being overweight can all put too much pressure on your veins and possibly contribute to spider vein formation.

How are spider veins treated?

At Star Laser, Dr. Palakurthi uses the Aerolase® Neo® laser system for effective spider vein removal. The Neo laser uses 650-microsecond laser pulses to agitate the vein walls. Your veins then respond to the laser heat by sealing off. At that point, the vein will slowly and gradually start to wither away because it has no blood supply.

Dr. Palakurthi addresses veins individually, so spider vein laser removal may occur in sections. You'll notice a gradual fading of the vein until it's gone.

How many spider vein removal treatments do I need?

It depends on how many spider veins you have, and also the size of the veins. For many small facial veins, for example, veins on the nose or cheeks, it may require just one session. For larger veins or for clusters of veins in multiple areas, you may need at least two sessions.
