Joint Injections Q & A

What are joint injections?

During joint injections, Dr. Palakurthi injects platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid, or both substances directly into a joint that's painful due to either acute sudden injury or a chronic condition such as osteoarthritis.

Joint injections deliver powerful healing and protective substances directly into the area where your body needs them the most, and can greatly enhance and speed up your recovery time if you're injured. If you have pain in your joint, joint injections offer effective pain relief for much longer than oral or topical medications possibly can.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is inside your body already, as part of your blood. The platelets in your blood are full of growth factors that play an integral role in healing. Ordinarily, your blood has a fairly low concentration of platelets, but PRP therapy extracts and concentrates those platelets to create a super-powerful plasma with up to 10 times as many platelets as usual.

Dr. Palakurthi takes a small blood sample, then uses a state-of-the-art centrifuge machine to spin the blood very rapidly. This extracts the platelets to form A-PRP®/ PRP™ for use in joint injections.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is near-identical to the hyaluronic acid that's stored in your joints. It lubricates and helps protect the joint from damage. However, over time, and with injury, the natural hyaluronic acid leaks away. Hyaluronic acid injections can replace that natural lubrication and protection.

Sometimes, PRP and hyaluronic acid are combined for joint injections. This can give you pain relief, improved range-of-motion in the painful joint, and reduced joint stiffness for a long time.

How long do joint injections last?

It can vary widely from one patient to another. If you're dealing with a sports injury or other injury, joint injections can speed up your healing and reduce your pain, helping you to achieve full recovery. After that, you don't need retreatment unless you're injured again.

In the case of chronic pain, you may enjoy anywhere from several weeks to many months of pain relief. Every patient is unique. Most joint injection patients find that it's a great way to feel better without having to rely on medication exclusively.
